Domestic
violence is increasing at an incredibly alarming rate. It is no respecter of
person, it has befallen the learned and unlearned. I was pained when I heard of
a medical doctor who died of domestic violence.
It takes
two to tangle, it's either the man is a psychotic who cannot control his anger
or the woman is so impossible. However, these are no justification to
perpetrate such an act. The annoying part of this whole insanity is that these
wounded women do not speak out. And when they realise that you are aware, they
still tell lies or give excuses for the actions of their partner.
For those
residing in Lagos State, there is a law providing protection against domestic
violence. If you feel shy to speak to friends and family, locate any welfare
office of the ministry of women affairs closest to you and make them aware of
the situation.
He hits you
and then showers you with gifts and flowers and you give a faint smile amidst
your bruises. A time is coming when you won't see these flowers not because he
has stopped buying them, but because by then, you might be lying still and
instead of handling it directly to you like before, he puts it on your coffin.
